What Happens During a Dental Checkup?

When arriving for your appointment, you will first be greeted by our warm and welcoming team before being escorted back to a treatment room. If it has been a while since your last visit, it may be necessary for us to take digital X-Rays of your oral cavity. We use a device that emits up to 80% less radiation than traditional X-Ray machines as well as a 3D Cone Beam Scanner to capture a high-resolution image of your entire facial structure.

After examining your X-Rays and images produced with our Cone Beam Scanner, Dr. Rouhani will perform a visual examination of your teeth, gums, oral tissues, and other oral structures. Not only will he be looking for signs of decay or gum disease, but he will also be checking for any abnormalities, lesions, or lumps that could potentially signal oral cancer.

During this same visit, you will also receive a thorough dental cleaning. Because plaque and tartar can accumulate around the gum line and on teeth, it is necessary that we use special instruments to remove this build up and give your smile a better chance of avoiding many common dental problems (i.e. cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease).

Once the plaque and tartar are thoroughly removed, we will quickly floss your teeth and give them a final polish before Dr. Rouhani provides helpful tips you can use to maintain a healthy smile while at home. Also, he will recommend any necessary treatments that are designed to address any issues he may have found during his examination. Whether it is periodontal therapy for signs of gum disease, a filling for a fully developed cavity, or suggestions for whitening your teeth, he will equip you with the information you need to make a well-informed decision.

Why Attending These Appointments Regularly Are Important

For some individuals, regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings are not necessary. They believe that as long as they are brushing, flossing, and rinsing at home as they should, they’re void of any possible problems. Unfortunately, this is simply not true.

The recommendation for six-month checkups and cleanings is due to the fact that they are proven effective at eliminating plaque and tartar accumulations and minimizing the risk for future dental issues.

By committing to these regular appointments, you can:

  • Avoid the potential for gum disease to develop
  • Prevent cavities from forming or allowing tooth decay to progress
  • Stay ahead of the game when it comes to being proactive about your oral health
  • Maintain greater peace of mind knowing your teeth and gums are in optimal condition
