What Are Implant Dentures?
Dental implants in North Dallas are small posts, made out of titanium, that act as prosthetic tooth roots once they are surgically placed beneath the gumline. They can provide a remarkably strong base of support for various types of restorations, including crowns, bridges, and full dentures.
There are two main categories of implant dentures. Depending on your unique circumstances, we may recommend that you get either a removable restoration or a permanent one.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
As their name implies, fixed implant dentures are permanently attached to the posts that support them; they can only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients love this option because they want to have their smile ready to go 24/7. However, this treatment does typically require more implant posts and greater jawbone density than removable dentures.
Removable Implant Dentures
A removable implant denture is designed to be removed daily for oral hygiene. It snaps onto small attachments on top of the dental implants. This is often a great option for patients who have lost some bone density in their jaw, since removable implant dentures may require as few as 2 – 5 posts per arch.
The Implant Denture Procedure
The implant denture procedure involves four main phases:
- During your consultation, we will learn about your unique situation and start planning the details of your treatment.
- We perform the implant placement surgery in-house. We strive to make it as comfortable as possible.
- Over the course of a few months, the implants will bond with your jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. Then, we may attach abutments (small connector pieces) to your implants.
- We will attach your restoration to your implants.
Although the implant denture process can take a while, it is well worth it due to the many benefits it provides!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Implant dentures might be suitable for you if:
- You are missing all or most of your teeth throughout one of your dental arches.
- Your jawbone is healthy enough and large enough to support dental implants.
- You are free of gum disease and other health conditions that might negatively affect your treatment outcome.
- You have good habits that will support your implants’ long-term success.
If you are not sure whether you qualify for this procedure, visit us for a consultation. Most adults can get dental implants, either right away or after preliminary care.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants
Some of the top benefits of implant dentures include:
- A strong bite: Implant dentures provide a strong bite force that can stand up to virtually any food.
- Longevity: Dental implants and the restorations attached to them can last for many years.
- Jawbone preservation: Dental implants stimulate the jawbone and prevent the deterioration that typically occurs after tooth loss.
- Beauty: Dental implant restorations are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
- Stability: You will not have to worry about the instability or changing fit of traditional dentures.
