Worst Foods For Oral Health

There are many foods that can have a direct impact to our teeth and oral health. Foods that are high in sugar content, like candy, cake, and soda, can wreak havoc on your teeth. A diet high in sugar content can also increase the chances of developing cavities. Additionally, foods high in acidity, like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and pickles, can erode the enamel of your teeth, which makes them more susceptible to damage. Here is a list of some common foods and beverages that can harm your oral health:

  • Sugary Foods

Foods and drinks that are high in sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth. When you eat sugary foods, the bacteria in your mouth produce acid as a byproduct. The acid that builds up in your mouth can wear down your enamel, leaving you open to developing cavities. The more sugar you consume, the higher the risk of tooth decay. Because bacteria feed off sugar, the more sugar there is in your mouth, the more the bacteria will thrive. Minimize the amount of sugar that gets into your mouth by cutting back on sugary drinks, not drinking soda, and avoiding candies.

  • Starchy Foods

Starchy foods, such as pasta and potatoes, are very difficult for your teeth to break down. They stay in your mouth for a long period of time, giving oral bacteria plenty of time to feed. To prevent starchy foods from damaging your teeth, drink water afterward. The water will help rinse away the food particles and bacteria.

  • Acidic Foods

Acidic foods and drinks are some of the worst culprits for causing damage to the enamel of your teeth. These include certain fruits, carbonated drinks, and juices, as well as coffee.

  • Tobacco Products

Cigarettes and cigars contain dangerous chemicals that can do a lot of damage to your mouth. Smoking can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and increase your risk of developing oral cancer. If you do smoke, it is best to quit as soon as possible.

  • Alcohol Products

Alcohol is bad for your health in general, so it’s even worse for your oral health. In addition to causing issues with your liver and brain, alcohol can dry out your mouth, which can result in bad breath. Additionally, alcohol can break down the protective enamel on your teeth. This enamel is your body’s natural defense against cavities, so the less of it you have, the more susceptible you are to oral health issues.
